Citizen Science Event on Climate Change, Sustainable Tourism and Cultural Heritage in Genoa

26/03/2026

On 2 March 2026, a citizen science event was held at the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art and Villetta Di Negro Park in Genoa, organised by the Municipality of Genoa in collaboration with the University of Genoa (UniGe–DICCA). The initiative involved 20 students from the Master’s Degree in Building Engineering (Urban Planning Laboratory), who participated both as active contributors and learners. The event also featured the contribution of 10 speakers from different departments of the Municipality of Genoa, including urban planning, disability management, art history, and mobility, ensuring a multidisciplinary perspective. Activities included presentations, a guided site visit, and interactive sessions focused on the HERIT ADAPT project, with particular attention to pilot actions such as improved signage and communication strategies for the museum, and the digitalisation of historical artefacts.
The event engaged a high number of students, ensuring strong youth participation and fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas. Through interactive tools such as Wooclap and SWOT-based group activities, participants actively contributed to assessing the pilot actions and co-creating new strategies to address climate change and overtourism. Key takeaways include valuable insights into enhancing visibility, inclusivity, and sustainability of cultural heritage sites, as well as a set of collaboratively developed proposals to strengthen climate adaptation and sustainable tourism practices. The event added significant value to the HERIT ADAPT project by integrating academic perspectives and citizen engagement into the ongoing participatory process.
